  • League table & results

    The League Results and Table following the week 17 fixtures last week and the playing of the postponed fixtures from Monday 7th October have been published.

    The final set of League fixtures for this season take place on Monday 14th October 2024.

    Given how close the battles are for both 2nd and 7th places going into the final round of fixtures, I think it is appropriate to remind everyone of the relevant part of the League's Constitution in determining position if teams finish the season level on points.

    During the season, I always separate teams level on points on total frame difference - it's easier that way! At the end of the season, the relevant bullet point of Constitution Section 4 (Administration) is always applied - it reads as follows;

    Should teams be tied on points and need to be separated to decide promotion or relegation issues, the following criteria will be used to decide which team finishes the highest:

    1) If one team has more wins overall;

    2) Whichever team has the advantage in total frame difference in all that season's League matches between the two;

    3) Whichever team has achieved the better total frame difference in all that season's League matches against the best-placed other team in the division, and so on down to the worst-placed other team;

    4) Play-off between the two teams (standard KO Cup rules will apply).

  • Updates from Officers & Captains Meeting

    A reminder that the closing date for registration of new players by teams for this season is now less than TWO weeks away - Captains must provide the names of any new players they wish to register to e-mail by Sunday 15th September.

    A reminder was given that ALL Captains MUST ensure that their players know and understand the Rules, especially if they are refereeing games but all players should be fully aware of them. Captains are also requested to ensure, if at all possible, that a copy of the Rules are on display near the pool tables at their home venues and, if that is not possible, are reminded of the requirement in the Rules (Rule 1.2, first bullet point) that a copy of the Rules must be available at every match in case they need to be referred to.

    Captains are requested to print off a copy of the Rules and the League's Constitution for display or to be available at matches.

    One final reminder,  Captains are reminded that it is expected on match nights that away team players will be given an opportunity from 7.45pm to get some practice on the match table should they wish to do so. Home Captains are expected to enable this to happen on a sportsmanlike basis.

  • Scotch Pairs Winners

    Congratulations to Ryan Ward (Horns Tavern) and Jamie Skipsey (Horns Tavern) for their victory in the Scotch Pairs at the Smeta Club on Monday evening.

    Dan Bourke (Horns Tavern) and Eamonn Staunton (Horns Tavern) came second and Chris Griffin (Smeta Elite) and Michael Keogh (Smeta Elite) third.

    We had two pairs fewer entering than last year yet the competition lasted significantly longer. If there's a repeat next year we may have to penalise slow players or introduce a shot clock!!!!

  • Scotch Pairs

    This is to confirm that, next Monday, 19th August 2024, we have the third and final of this year's three Summer Competitions, Scotch Pairs, which this year will take place at Smeta Club from 8.00pm. All players are welcome but, as always with these additional competitions, there's no obligation whatsoever.

    Please note the following:

    1/ The entry fee for each competition will be £2 per player - in the case of Ten Ball Crush and Speed Pool, the entry fee will allow players TWO goes in the competition. If time permits, players can purchase a further two attempts for another £2.

    2/ The winners of each competition will win 50% of the entry fees with the remainder going to the League as a much-needed boost for League funds. In the case of Scotch Pairs, the winning pair will share 50% of the entry fees.

    3/ Players will pay the table costs between them in each competition in addition to their entry fees.

    4/ Entry in each competition is open to all players in the League and anyone else at the venue on the night. Please encourage your teammates to enter. It is appreciated that some will currently be on holiday.

    I should also mention that, in this competition, players wishing to participate can pair up with anyone they wish on the night - it doesn't have to be a member of their own team.

    Any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Speed Pool winner

    Congratulations to Kevin Dempsey (Conquering Heroes) for winning Speed Pool on Monday, with the first sub one-minute clearance we've had for some time, over Eamonn Staunton (Horns Tavern) who came second, with Nigel Goodman (unattached) third.

    The number of entrants was slightly down on last year's competition which may well have been down to the sheer heat and humidity of Monday evening.

  • Ten Shot Crush winner

    Congratulations to Eamonn Staunton for winning Ten Shot Crush on Monday, albeit by the narrowest of margins, one point, over Kevin Dempsey who came second, with Connor Burger third.

    All three players beat last year's winning score with the first two beating it on both their attempts.

    It was a great night with more than twice as many entrants as last year's competition.

  • Addendum to Mid-Season update

    Dear All,

    Pairs

    The Pairs Mini-Competitions were played last Monday – there were only two no shows and two original entries were replaced and two original entries were replaced; once again both of these numbers are record lows during my time in the League. The full results from all Mini-Competitions will be added to the website in the near future. As you know, this is a continuous draw, like the Wimbledon tennis draw, therefore the matches in the next round are known. That will be the Quarter Finals on Monday 4th November and the Semi-Finals will also take place that evening.

    Another first is that I think that this is the first time we have ever had FOUR members of the same family among the 16 players who will contest the Quarter Finals!

    The Quarter Final draw is as follows;

    Chris Owens & Lee Suggars (Horns Tavern) v Dana Ward & Steven Anderson (Hand in Hand)

    Julian Phipps & Eamonn Staunton (Horns Tavern) v Tony Holman & Jake Holman (Prince of Wales)

    Gary Owens & Rhys Owens (Smeta All Starz) v Peter Harrison & J J Harrison (Streatham Vale Sports & Social Club)

    Wayne Owens & Gary Francis (Smeta All Starz) v Ellison Walker & Derrick Brown (Hand in Hand)

  • Maurice Wick Memorial Trophy

    SOUTH EAST LONDON POOL LEAGUE

    MAURICE WICK MEMORIAL TROPHY

    Monday 29th July 2024

    VENUE: SMETA CLUB

    10 St. Matthew's Road, Brixton Hill, SW2 1NH

    Registration NOT LATER than 8.00 pm

    Play starts straight after the draw at 8.05 pm

    This tournament is our annual memorial event in memory of the League's Founder and former Chairman and Life President.

    The tournament will be a straight single-frame knock out with, hopefully, a best of three frames in the Final. Table fees for each frame will be covered by the League as usual. Each team is entitled to enter one player by virtue of the League entry fees paid at the start of the season. It is up to individual Teams and Captains who represents their teams on the night.

    In addition, the draw will be made up to 16 players on the night as follows;

    There are automatic places in the draw for David Hector who won the event last year, for League President Graham Williams (if available) who knew Mo well, and for Dane Wick, Mo's son, if he wishes to play.

    As in past years, at 8.00 pm on the night, a draw will be made of teams with additional players present at Smeta on the night and the drawn Teams' Captains will choose an additional player from their team who is present to participate.

    All players intending or wishing to participate MUST be at the venue by 8.00 pm to register so that the draw can take place at 8.05 pm promptly and the competition commences immediately after that.

    Kind regards,

    Simon

  • Mid-Season Update

    The Selpool league results and table following the week 13 fixtures on Monday 8th July are now up on the website. A couple of apologies - they have been there for much of this week but this is the first opportunity I have had to tell you, and also an apology that I appear not to have added the BCC list on the evening of Sunday 7th July so none of you would have known that the week 12 results and table were up. I blame the weather!

    This e-mail is also to give you an update on various other matters;

    Knock Out Cup Quarter Final Draw

    Unfortunately, one of the Preliminary Round matches was not able to go ahead on 10th June due to a small fire that evening in the cellar at the Conquering Hero. That match will be played in September. As it stands the draw for the Quarter Finals to be played on Monday 21st October is as follows (home teams first);

    Duke of Edinburgh v Marquis of Lorne

    Smeta All Starz v Streatham Vale Sports & Social Club

    Prince of Wales v Smeta Elite

    Conquering Heroes or Horns Tavern v Prince of Wales B

    Singles

    The Singles Mini-Competitions were played last Monday - there were only two no shows and no original entries were replaced; both of these numbers are record lows during my time in the League. The full results from all Mini-Competitions will be added to the website in the near future. As you know, this is a continuous draw, like the Wimbledon tennis draw, therefore the matches in the next round are known. That will be the Quarter Finals on Monday 28th October and the Semi-Finals will also take place that evening. The Quarter Final draw is as follows;

    Antonio Stephens (Duke of Edinburgh) v Kevin Dempsey (Conquering Heroes)

    Jon Laidley (Hand in Hand) v Matthew Harrison (Hand in Hand)

    Ellison Walker (Hand in Hand) v Jamie Skipsey (Horns Tavern)

    Eamonn Staunton (Horns Tavern) v John Dalton (Prince of Wales)

    Pairs

    This coming Monday, 22nd July, the Pairs Mini-Competitions are taking place - the schedules have been circulated with matches at Duke of Edinburgh, Horns Tavern, Prince of Wales and Smeta Club.

    Maurice Wick Memorial Trophy

    On Monday 29th July, we have the annual Maurice Wick Memorial Trophy at the Smeta Club. Information on this event follows separately.

    Summer Events

    This year, we have three summer events during August. Details of each event will follow separately nearer the time but, so that you know in advance, and so that relevant Captains can inform the venue staff accordingly, here are the dates and venues for the three competitions;

    Monday 5th August: Ten Shot Crush at Prince of Wales.

    Monday 12th August: Speed Pool at Horns Tavern.

    Monday 19th August: Scotch Pairs at Smeta Club.

    As per the League Calendar, League matches resume with week 14 on Monday 9th September.

    I think that covers everything. Any queries, let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Simon

  • AGM & Presentation Night

    Dear All,

    Our Annual General Meeting and Presentation Night will be taking place on Friday 26th January 2024 at Streatham Vale Sports and Social Club - refer to the Events page on the SELPOOL website. I hope that as many players as possible have received the hard copies of this flyer which were circulated to Captains before Christmas for handing out to players.

    Captains please note - the Club need to have an estimate of numbers for the event by this coming Sunday. To that end I shall be contacting Captains later this week to ask about numbers - you don't need to be precise, a best guesstimate will be acceptable. Given that there are winners representing 10 of last season's 11 teams (as well as one person not attached to a team!), we really hope for a good attendance as we really don't want to be taking trophies home after the event to pass on to people later.

    Captains also please note - paperwork for registering your teams for the new season was also delivered before Christmas. Please note that it is expected that you will bring your fully completed registration and who's who forms along with your team's 2024 fee to the Annual General Meeting.

    Further information about the AGM will be circulated to Captains a little nearer the time.

    I look forward to seeing everyone on 26th January.

    Kind regards,

    Simon Hooberman

    League Secretary

  • New season

    Dear All,

    The new pool season will be getting under way in the next few weeks. To that end, I would be grateful if Captains or their representatives can confirm by reply e-mail the latest situation regarding your team for 2024. I hope everyone will be continuing. We are also still trying to recruit some new teams but time is running out.

    Captains also please note - paperwork for registering your teams for the new season was also delivered before Christmas. Please note that it is expected that you will bring your fully completed registration and who's who forms along with your team's 2024 fee to the Annual General Meeting.
